The People Speak: Marisa Tomei

Chelsea Manning’s “Sometimes You Have to Pay a Heavy Price...”

In The People Speak, some of today’s leading performers and artists give voice to figures neglected by history. In 2010, Private First Class Chelsea Manning released hundreds of thousands of classified documents to the publisher WikiLeaks, including video of a deadly U.S. airstrike on Iraqi civilians. Arrested several months later, Manning spent nearly a year in solitary confinement before facing court-martial on charges including "aiding the enemy." This is Manning's statement in 2013 after she was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison. In response to pressure to free her, President Obama commuted part of Manning’s sentence and she was released on May 17, 2017.
