Following a sold-out world premiere at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus in Greece and in Athens, Greece, this vibrant retelling of Aristophanes ancient comedy travels to New York City for its American debut.

Director Nikos Karathanos’ adaptation is both true to Aristophanes’ original and creatively adapted to reflect on contemporary concerns. This playful feast for the senses presents the original cast from Athens.

On the Endurance of Aristophanes' Birds, by Edith Hall

"Aristophanes’ Birds gave the word “Cloudcuckooland” to the English language, denoting the cerebral space inhabited by unrealistic dreamers."

Essay by Director Nikos Karathanos

"We want to speak to you of the people who stand on one leg all the time, who feel foreign and alien in the very midst of their own city, who fear their difference."

Introduction to Aristophanes' The Birds, by Young Richard Kim

"Aristophanes was never shy about lampooning his contemporaries by name and addressing the most pressing issues of his day."
