This lecture marks the 2500th anniversary of the foundation of Greek democracy as a result of the Kleisthenic reforms of about 507 b.c. It covers the role the Agora played in the administration of the Athenian democracy, based on the archaeological evidence recovered in the American excavations of the ancient civic center of Athens.
