The New Hellenic Quartet, founded in 1991, is considered Greece's foremost chamber ensemble and has played in such leading worldwide venues as the Athens Festival (2004), Beethoven Festwochen (Bonn, 2003), "Sch?nberg in Berlin" International Meeting (Vienna, 2002), Contemporary Music Festival (Denmark, 2000), Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Florence, 1999), Vaughan Williams Festival (London), Bemus (The Belgrade Music Festival), Days of Italian Music (Athens Megaron, 1996), Thessaloniki String Quartet Festival (1996), and Nafplion Festival (regularly since 1995). During 2002-3 they toured China, the United States, and Brazil and took part in the official Greek participation in the four hundredth anniversary of Saint Petersburg.
Works for string quartet by Greek composers have remained at the core of the New Hellenic Quartet's repertoire. Highlights include the performance and recording of sixteen modern Greek quartets in 1996 for the League of Greek Composers (Agora Musica), the performance in Athens Megaron of the complete string quartets of Yorgos Sicilianos and Dimitri Dragatakis, and the performance of Skalkottas' quartets in London, Paris, Berlin, Munich, and Stockholm under the auspices of the Foundation for Greek Culture.
